Figures and Fish
Cape Corset circa 1965
Stone, Antler
H18 in.
Lukta Qiatsuk was an important sculpture and graphic artist in Cape Dorset. He was also one of a handful of Dorset artists who made copper engravings published in the early 1960s. This segment of antler shows his skill and confidence as an engraver and graphic artist translated seamlessly to scrimshaw. One side narrates a figure in motion, we wonder if in some kind of dance. The reverse illustrates a beluga and narwal above a hunting station, possibly telling a story of balance or sustenance tied to marine life.
