A diminutive washstand or dressing table made by an Ottawa Valley woodworker embellished with all sorts of folk art features. Every border is finished with bold scrolling cutouts, the cornice with an ebonized and carved applique. The three drawers are raised on intricately turned legs. The back is secured to base with a mechanism devised by the maker. Several case pieces have been discovered in the Ottawa Valley with heavily scrolled borders, likely informed by Germanic or Polish influences brought over with immigrants to the Ottawa Valley in the late 19th and early 20th c. We would suggest the maker of this piece was also informed by Victorian catalogue furniture, evident in the addition of a vertical mirror and cornice molding. Perhaps the most charming feature is scale, made roughly ¾ the size of what you would expect looking at the photo. Standing roughly 6 feet tall and just 32” wide, one could fit any place in a modern space. Almost certainly made for a loved one.
